Singapore Feb 2016

Here are some drawings I made while in Singapore.

This is Singapore on the night we arrived.

This is a cafe called Real Food in the basement of a food court that quickly became our "home base".

Next day, we went to a Filipino barbeque at an American ex-pat's place.  It was lovely.

Apparently, there was a domestic servant locked out on the balcony while the family that he worked for went on vacation. When he tried to escape by climbing down, the neighbor saw him and called the police.  As the escapee was stuck on the balcony for a very long time, it is a very sad story.

The above are more images from "Real Food" our home base.  Nina told me a ghost story about how she stayed at one hotel and a ghost visited her and tried to enter her body.

Here was a Hindu temple drawn on a very cloudy, hot/humid day.

Next day was spent at Arab Street.

Chinatown station had a nice building overlooking the street with the metro station.  There were beautiful azaleas, and it was temperate under the awning, especially in the morning.

Both of the images above are from Little India.  The colors were amazing.

Here was an old colonial British church, drawn from the National Library.  I drew with someone from the Urban Sketchers there, a lovely man, Tony.

Here is a drawing of Bamboo at the Botanical Gardens.  It was very lush.

This is from the Orchid section of the Botanical Gardens.

Last sunrise in Singapore.  Good bye. I will miss you.

Disney's Animal Kingdom: Marking Marks

Here are some drawings from Disney's Animal Kingdom.  Most of them were done using marks.

Here is an Asian style boat. Unfortunately, it started to rain.  It was nice to get away from the crowds for some alone time to draw.  Even though I enjoy drawing people.

'Here is a zebra eating from a tree.

So many birds and nests so visible!

Here is a partridge.  I've never seen one before, as far as I remember.  It reminded me of: "... and a partridge in a pear tree."

For a while I became obsessed with birds.  The bottom one reminds me of one of my favorite fairy tales called "The Ugly Bird".  However, this particular bird was beautiful.

Above are some images of Entertainers.  Musicians, drummers, stilt-walkers, dancers.

Here is a portrait of a man making wood carvings of animals that you can purchase.  He was also entertaining and he begrudgingly let me draw him.

Disney's Magic Kingdom

The Crowds

The crowds at Magic Kingdom can be very intense.  Its mainly families with small children often melting down, capturing precious moments, or just delighted in taking in their environment.  There is a backdrop of ornate, nostalgic architecture, Disney staff in period costumes, and some spectacle (e.g. Mickey or a princess etc.) Sometimes it is sweet, funny; sometimes just over-the-top.

A couple watching the crowds together.

The Families/The Moms

I found myself drawing other Moms, some sweet, some exasperated.  It was a reflection on my own thoughts about The Mom Role, as an insider.

The Parades

Parades are among the top attractions of Disney's Magic Kingdom.  I find them very old-timey and quaint, having entertained people well before the internet, the television and even radio.   But they can also be very loud, aggressive and scary.

I found myself getting very emotional while watching them.   They brought up many dreams, fantasies and even nightmares.  For me they were very surreal.  I tried to depict them in various drawings and in various styles, below.

In this image, I looked very closely at Miro.
